Dr Lorin Lakasing MD FRCOG
Lorin has been a NHS Consultant in Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine since 2004.
During her postgraduate training she worked in both teaching and district general hospitals in the London area. As part of her training, she applied for research grants and undertook 4 years of laboratory-based research investigating how maternal disease can affect placental function contributing to increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth and fetal growth restriction. She was awarded a doctorate in medicine for this work. Lorin has maintained a keen interest in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and is an educational supervisor for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
For over 30 years, Lorin has remained committed to clinical service delivery and cares for women with both normal and complex pregnancies. She attends regular update meetings in the field of antenatal screening and has contributed to local and national clinical guidelines. Her areas of interest include the capture and interpretation of clinical data, avoidance of harm and obstetric litigation. To that end she has been involved in audits, actively participated in maternity risk management and undertaken external reviews. Lorin has acted as an expert witness at coroner’s court hearings and written several reports for the civil court in cases of potential obstetric malpractice, and her training in mediation and alternative dispute resolution supports this work. Lorin also conducts appraisals for doctors registered with the General Medical Council.
At various times in her career, Lorin has had opportunities to work abroad including clinical placements, research projects or women's health education schemes in Australia, Singapore, Denmark, South Africa and Sri Lanka. She is involved in voluntary work and fundraising for several charities focussed on women's reproductive healthcare globally.
